課程概述

This course aims to offer practical training in translating advanced journalistic texts with a particular emphasis on columns and feature stories (so-called “soft news”) that focus on in-depth discussions and diverse coverage of the latest topics ranging from politics and critics, international debates, current affairs, cultures, technology, as well as light-hearten writings towards both historical and contemporary figures, etc. The nature of these journalistic texts does not deliver news directly, but builds on news reported in a previous news cycle. The style and genre of ‘soft news’ borders on information and entertainment features highly individualized writing styles often intertwined with satirical tones, personalized and witty views of the columnists/writers, and knowledge intricately tied up in socio-cultural embeddedness.

課程目標
 Be able to familiarise themselves, highlight and handle specific features in such text types at lexical, syntactical, discoursal, textual levels and beyond.
 Be able to develop an awareness of vital translation issues in relation to the text types for the advanced journalistic texts.
 Be able to develop analytical and problem-solving skills in handling such text types.
課程要求
 Understand that assignments generated or edited by machine translation tools will result into an automatic FAIL
 Complete and submit the weekly or fortnightly assignments (translation and revision) for the purpose of peer review and in-class discussion at least THREE days before class (see instructions in class)
 Present their translation commentaries and peer-review in the first part of classes
 Understand that any unjustified class absence and late submission and absence of assignments for up to two times may result in a ZERO of the entire assessment
 Not submit any overdue coursework/assignments without any prior discussion/negotiation with the course coordinator; in general, an extension will only be granted for serious circumstances that require compassionate consideration, such as sudden serious illness, loss of family, or a car accident
 NOT expect spoon-fed teaching from the lecturer
 Be proactively participating in their own learning process, both in and after class, including (in-class) translation practice, self-critic, peer-review as well as mini presentation on a regular basis
 Be able to work individually on and responsible for their coursework, including paying attention to details when writing assignments and punctual submission of any types, either through e-mail or in hard-copy
 Be good team players when pair/teamwork is required
 Use NTU e-mail and COOL as the channel of the first point of contact
 Discuss with the lecturer with regard to their learning process at any time during the semester
